Paul Haggis is famous for co-writing the 2006 Oscar winner “Crash.” His personal accomplishments and portfolio are vast while spanning over 20 years in the film industry.

The arrest is believed to have taken place in the Italian town of Ostuni after the assaulted woman surrendered to police and reported the matter. He assaulted her multiple times over the span of two days while in town to attend an entertainment industry event. The Variety report includes the attorney general’s memo on the case.

Silvia Bizio and Sol Costales Doulton present the entertainment event taking place in Italy. It will go as planned, regardless of the director’s mishap. However, the classes Haggis should have taught during the event are discarded and will be skipped. He should have given several master classes on directing.

The event organizers have issued statements regarding the incident. They share the information that they are aware of the situation. That they receive the information “with dismay and shock the news that Paul Haggis is in custody for violence”.

“The artistic directors of Allora Fest immediately took steps to remove any involvement of the director from the event. They also express their full solidarity and support for the woman involved. The themes chosen for the Festival are, among others, those equality, gender equality and solidarity – the report states.

“As professionals and as women, the artistic directors are appalled and hope that the Festival will be a further opportunity to inform and raise awareness of such a current and dramatically increasing problem.” – They add.

Variety states that according to the Italian police report, Haggis had accompanied the assaulted woman to Brindisi’s Papola Casale airport. He left her there and went on with his business. According to the report, she was in a “precarious physical and psychological state”. Border staff and police had to help him get back on his feet.

The woman told police what happened and who hurt her. She was then accompanied to the Italian police mobile unit in Brindisi. From there, she goes to the local hospital to open a report and undergo a physical examination. She is a victim of rape, the hospital confirmed.

This isn’t the first time the director has faced such accusations. Once, in 2013, publicist Haleigh Breest sued him for sexually assaulting her.
