The government of Maharashtra on November 18 reduced the special duty rate on imported alcoholic beverages from 300 to 150 percent. As a result, the excise service announced new tariffs for alcohol taking into account production costs. People won’t need to buy alcohol in other states to save a few rupees. However, if anyone does, they will face severe measures. At present, prices for eight types of alcohol have been set and similar rates of alcohol from other companies will be announced shortly, officials from the excise department said.

The decision to reduce the special tariffs reduced the rates of alcohol imported into the state and brought them into line with those of other states. The rate cut will now help curb smuggling. In addition, counterfeit alcohol and forms of theft will be reduced, it is claimed.
