LOS ANGELES, California, USA, July 2, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — Independence Day, or the 4th of July as it is more commonly known, is not just a time of patriotic celebration with barbecues, family and fireworks – it’s also a time of increased car accidents.
The Ryan Law Group, a Los Angeles-based personal injury law firm, compiled data from two sources on motor vehicle accidents over the July 4 weekend and found that not only are there an increase in car accidents during this period, but there is an increase in those involving alcohol.
According to SWITRS (Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System), which is operated by California Highway Patrol, for the July 4 weekend, 25 to 30 percent of all crashes occur between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
For the period from 01/07 to 05/07, Independence Day actually tends to have the fewest accidents. This could be due to fewer people traveling on the 4th of July itself.
The most important day for accidents is actually July 3, the day before. The Ryan Law Group observed a 10-30% decrease in accidents from July 3-4.
However, there is a 40-45% increase in alcohol-related crashes on Independence Day compared to the day before.
So what can you do? According to TIMS (Transportation Injury Mapping System), which is run by UC Berkeley but pulls data from SWITRS, the most rugged areas on July 4 in Los Angeles are the 110 freeway, specifically between the 105 and 10 freeways; Highway 10, especially between highways 110 and 710; the Marina Del Rey and Santa Monica areas; and many neighborhoods in Burbank, Reseda and Van Nuys.
Avoid traveling to these areas during the Independence Day weekend, and especially avoid traveling between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
